Scope and Contents

Papers of Viviane Bryant, consisting mainly of letters from her supervisor in Classics, Robert Gardner, later Bursar of Emmanuel College with whom she kept in touch after College until his death in 1972. The letters were usually written in response to hers, sent at Christmas. Also two cuttings about Girton, one from the Times 3 January 1969 and one from Illustrated 28 May 1949, as well as various Roll and Girton Review miscellanea.

Biographical / Historical

Viviane Bryant (nee Hindmarsh) was born in France. Her father was an English journalist, and her mother was French. She was educated in Alnwick then at the Godolphin and Latymer School, London and came to Girton to read Classics 1940-43. She was an Amelia Gurney Scholar and received the Alice Zimmern Memorial Prize in 1943. After Girton she became a temporary assistant at the Ministry of Works 1943-54, then worked in Youth Employment in Hemel Hempstead until 1954. She married Edward Bryant in 1951 and had 2 sons and a daughter. She had a life-long interest in local history, holding various positions in local history societies and publishing articles on the subject.
