Scope and Contents
Green hardback photograph album. Flyleaf inscribed ‘ “My Roots” and “Life” by Margaret Tyler née Hughes’. Containing 19 album leaves. [These have now been numbered 1-37 including the inside back cover.] The album contains sepia, b/w and colour photographs, of various sizes, of immediate and extended family and friends and of family homes, family holidays and family weddings; also some family ephemera. All pasted in or held in place with photograph corners. All with captions and keys to names.
Including studio portrait photographs of:
Elizabeth Vorstius [Margaret’s maternal grandmother], pages 1 and 3
Gladys Margaret Hughes [Margaret’s mother], pages 1, 3, 7 and 16;
Albert Arthur Hughes [Margaret’s father], pages 1, 4 and 7;
Margaret Tyler née Hughes, pages 12, 21, 23, 24 and 35.
Page 36 includes two colour snaps of Margaret, one in Emily Davies Court and the other with a friend by the hyphen gate, captioned ‘I return to Girton for Roll weekend’ [no date: 1970s?].
Other material includes the following:
Page 13 includes a lock of Margaret’s hair as a child, taped to the page;
Page 21 includes an envelope taped to the page containing a letter to Margaret, 13 July 1944, from M Longden [presumed to be Margaret’s primary school teacher; the letter is presumed to be a reply to a letter sent by Margaret to her teacher during the war – the caption on page 21 reads ‘During V2’s I went to Blockley, Glos.’];
Page 24 includes the service sheet for Margaret’s marriage to Colin Tyler on 30 August 1958 and a birth announcement card for their son David, 1964;
Page 27 includes a birth announcement card for their son Richard, 1966.
