Scope and Contents

Copy of indenture between Geoffrey Boleyn, Henry Frowik, citizens and mercers of London, Thomas Boleyn, clerk, Thomas Hoo, esquire, Thomas Burgoyn of co. Cambs, gentleman, and John Sturion citizen and mercer of London on the one part and William Whalley, Prior of the church or priory of the Blessed Mary and St Thomas Martyr of Newark [novo loco] near Guilford, Surrey, and the convent there of the other part witnesses that as the said prior and convent by a deed dated 23 May 1449 have granted to Geoffrey, etc., an annual rent of £16 from lands and tenements in the parishes of St Mary le Bow, St Mary Abchurch, St Mary Somerset, St Mary Magdalene, old Fish Street, St Stephen Walbrook, Holy Trinity the Less, St Nicholas Cole Abbey, St Peter in Westcheap in London, St Giles without Cripplegate in the suburbs and elsewhere in the city and suburbs payable in four annual instalments, at Whitsun, St Peter ad Vincula, All Saints and Lady Day starting from Whitsun next (provided that if the rent be 8 days late the prior and convent shall pay Geoffrey, etc., an additional £8 for each quarter when the rent is overdue; failing which the receipients may enter into the convent’s property in Essex, Surrey, Hampshire or elsewhere in England to make distraint). The rent to be paid until the convent has paid Geoffrey at St Mary le Bow the sum of 460 marks (£308 13s 4d) whereupon Geoffrey, etc., will quitclaim to the annuity.
