Under a codicil toTenison's will he left to the college £200 of which £100 was to be laid out on land the revenues from which were to be expended every four years on a 10s fee to the bursar for keeping the accounts; 10s per mess (four persons) of Fellows dining on 4 November, and the remainder for a prize for a Norwich Scholar most successful in an examination on Columella's De Re Rustica, which examination was to be conducted by the Masters of Corpus, Gonville and Caius and Trinity Hall, and was to take the form of translating passages from Samuel Hartlibb's Legacy for the Enlargement of the Discourse of Husbandry into Latin. Of the remaining £100, £50 was to be spent on buying a copy of every edition of Columella and of Hartlibb, and any other books for the library, and £50 on repairs to the college.
The college wishes to repudiate the first part of the bequest and to accept the two sums of £50. Counsel's opinion is that this is not an option.
