John Baker was half-brother to Matthew Parker by his father's marriage to Matthew's mother. He held the lease of the lordship of Landbeach, which he yielded back to the college in 1571 before it was half expired, at a value of 400 marks which he allotted to the payment of the tuition of the twenty scholars then founded, with a like sum to the Master, but 'some inconveniences being found in this manner of disposition, it was afterwards altered, and part of it applied to the commons of the Master and Fellows till the expiration of the lease, when the whole was appropriated to that purpose for a Hundred years' (Masters, p. 95).
