Lease book 1, 1400 - 1562
Scope and Contents
Two volumes bound as one: 1. 1471-1523, on vellum; 2: 1524-1562 on paper, with other memorabilia of temp. Matthew Parker.
Many entries have been made retrospectively and are not in chronological order. They are, briefly, chronological from 1485. All entries are entered here as copies of the original deeds, where extant, and intercalated in the main series of deeds, where the originals are no longer held.
Ff. 84a-d contain historical materials: Nicholas Cantelupe's 'De antiquitate et origine alme et immaculate universitatis Cantebrigie'; memoranda concerning the peasant's revolt of 1381; copies of the spurious papa; bulls of Honorius I and Sergius, and the bull of John XXII.
On f. 98, note of the death of William Sowode, Master, on 28 November 1544 and on f. 98A a note of the beginning of Matthew Parker's mastership on 4 December 1544.and of the presentation on 5 December 1544 of Thomas Cobbe to the rectory of Landbeach. These two items repeated on f. 101.
From 1544 to 1562 there are notes of sealings of documents not transcribed.
Certain folios were previously pasted together and the pasted sides omitted from the original foliation; they are now numbered, e.g. 98A. 110A and 110B, however, are items tipped in.
The lasts page contains pen-trials, mottoes in Latin and Greek, rough calculations and a memorandum that on 23 May 1569 the tenenats of the Cardinal's Hat were warned to make reparations there.
