Letter to Robert Townley Caldwell, bursar., 1879-03-04
Scope and Contents
As a result of Caldwell's personal application on 3 March the Home Secretary, Richard Assheton Cross, will grant a licence for the interment of James Pulling in the chapel, The necessary physical conditions are specified. The licence is granted because 'the arrangements for the interment were made in ignorance of the Order in Council and the mistake not discovered until too late to make other arrangements except at excessive inconvenience to the University and College Authorities'. Under the Burials Act of 1853, Pulling, in his capacity of master, had a right to interment before the passing of the Act.
