Papers relating to a claim against the college by William Francis Dixon, 1880

 File
Reference Code: GBR/0268/CCCC06/W1-14

Scope and Contents

Dixon claims that he had submitted a design for a stained glass window representing the crucifixion, and had been informed by the college on 1 August 1879 that his design had been accepted. The college had, however, refused to allow him to erect the window. He claims either £500 for breach of contract or £150 for work and labour done by him in and about the preparing of the design,.
The college denies that Dixon's design was ever selected, and indeed, the Chapter Book entry for 30 July 1879 clearly states that the design chosen for the east window was that of Messrs Heaton, Butler and Bayne.
Apparently Dixon's design and that of Heaton, Butler and Bayne, both based on the King's College crucifixion, were very similar and the college had decided to go with the latter (currently in place). On returning the designs Heaton and Co's was inadvertently sent to Dixon, who, on inspecting the successful design correctly identified it as his.
