Quadripartite indenture concerning nomination of the three Canterbury scholars, delivery of plate and books to Gonville and Caius and Trinity Hall, etc., 1580-04-12
Scope and Contents
Whereas by indenture of 17 Apr. 1578 [53.1a above] John Parker, in fulfilment of his father's will, has granted an annuity of £10 from property in Lambeth for support of three scholars, the nominations are to lie with John Parker during his life and the Archbishop of Canterbury, and, in a vacancy in the see, with the Master and Fellows of CCC. The first scholar is to be born in Canterbury and educated at Canterbury school, the second born and educated at Aylsham and the third born and educated at Wymondham. [Note that Canterbury scholars were already in existence by the time of this indenture.] The scholars should be 'entered into the skill of song as that they shall at the first sight solf and sing plain song' and should be 'of the best and aptest scholars well instructed in their grammar and, if it may be, such as can make a [Latin] verse'. If none such can be found and approved by the Master and Fellows, John Parker may choose anyone he pleases, and thereafter the college may make choice of a scholar from one of the other schools. If Parker or the Archbishop fail to make a nomination within 30 days the college may elect anyone born in either the diocese of Canterbury or that of Norwich if there is no-one suitable from any of the 3 schools. No such scholar is to be absent for more than one month in the year unless sent on college business or compelled by some notable sickness, in which case he shall not 'lease' his commodity of commons and allowance of 12 per week.
The college covenants to pay the scholars and to allow the three of them the ex-storehouse as a chamber, and to allow them reading in hall, barber and laundry.

The indenture of 6 Aug. 1574 [39-42 above] is ratified, and the increases in commons, etc., are to be retained by the fellows in case of absence on college business or sickness.
