Biographical / Historical

The gild came into existence at some time between 1279 and 1285. It was closely associated with Great St Mary's church and was almost certainly a purely religious gild, notwithstanding its having the title of the 'Gild of Merchants of the Blessed Virgin of Cambridge' in two charters of 1303. For the early history of the gild see Bateson, pp. xii-xviii.
