Scope and Contents

The collections consists of letter written by Aldis to his mother describing the visit made by Lord Kitchener to Cambridge whilst he was still Sirdar in Egypt. The collection also contains a hand drawn pen and ink sketch (possibly self portrait) of Aldis.

Biographical / Historical

Aldis was the inventor of the Aldis lamp, more commonly recognised as a hand held signal lamp used by ships to communicate with each other from afar and also mastered the use of the lamp to send messages in Morse code. Aldis was also made a 'Second Wrangler' whilst at Trinity Hall by achieving the second highest mark in the University for his mathematics degree when it was awarded to him in 1900.
