Sir Moses I. Finley was the second Master. He was Master from 1975-82, and died on 23 June 1986. The bulk of his academic papers, listed by Professor Riccardo di Donato, are housed in the University Library.
Sir Moses Finley was born in New York City. He studied psychology and a master’s in public law at Syracuse and Columbia University. He taught at Columbia University and City College of New York. During his time teaching in America, he got caught up in the anti-communist investigations of 1952 and again in 1954. Moses Finley immigrated to Britain in 1955 where he became a lecturer in classics at Cambridge University from 1955 to 1964 and professor of ancient history from 1970 to 1979. While being a professor of ancient history he was appointed as Master of Darwin College. He held this position from 1976 to 1982.
In 1974 he gave the Mortimer Wheeler Archaeological Lecture. The sales of his books go into supporting a Junior Research Fellowship at Darwin College.
