Sir Frank George Young is the first Master of Darwin College, Cambridge. He was Master from 1964 to 1976.
Sir Frank George Young was born in London. In 1939 he studied chemistry and physics at undergraduate level and did postgraduate research in biochemistry at University College London. He became a professor of biochemistry at UCL in 1945 before joining Cambridge University as the third Sir William Dunn Professor of Biochemistry in 1949. During his time at Cambridge University Sir Frank Young wrote strongly in favour of the foundation of a graduate college and when Darwin College was founded in 1964, he was appointed Master. As the first Master of Darwin College Frank Young wrote a history of the college which also explored its foundation. He retired in 1975 from both his position as Master at Darwin College and professor of biochemistry.
Frank Young’s research focused on endocrine and diabetes. His work gained him lots of recognition from the British Diabetic Association, American Diabetes Association, and the Endocrine Society of the USA. Throughout his career Frank Young also gave lectures at Yale University, University of Oslo, Harvard University medical school, University of Oxford, the Royal Society, and St John’s College, Cambridge.
