The award was introduced in 1999 at Addenbrooke's. It was one of a number of hospitals to be left a bequest of £10,000 to be used as an award for the best student nurse who had completed three years consecutive training. It was the benefactor's wish that the cup should be displayed each year on St Valentines Day to remind student nurses of their 'pride and loyalty to a great cause'.
