Biographical / Historical
Herman Lehmann, who was Professor of Clinical Biochemistry in Addenbrooke's, continued to use this tank regularly until his retirement in 1977. Although his team performed various other tests on the same samples, Herman Lehmann himself prepared and studied the paper electrophoresis patterns in each blood sample referred for his option by the WHO and others, from patients who were thought to have unusual haemoglobinopathies. He had largely developed the scientific study and the protocols for hospital investigation of such patients , whose disease is caused by inherited abnormalities in the haemoglobin molecule, such as sickle cell anaemia.
