Biographical / Historical
Amongst a lot of books the depositor bought recently at auction in East Sussex was a copy of Addenbrooke's Hospital Student Nurses' Magazine 1932, inside were handwritten rhyming verses about nurses working on Griffiths Ward that might be of interest; Nurses Bailey, Round, Pickard, Norfolk, Porter, Yates and Dr Haynes.
Also limericks about Tipperary Ward 1929; Nurses Alford, Bailey, Baumann, Green, Ison, Jones, King, Luck, Peck, Rogers, Round, Runnacles, Swann.
There is also a small, handmade booklet describing work in theatre through rhyme and charming cartoons.
Mary Round's name is one that comes up in the inscriptions in several of the books - she regularly received religious children's books for good Sunday school attendance from the vicar of Buckland and Laverton in Gloucestershire circa 1916, making her the right age to be a young nurse in the late 1920s. The books may have came from a house clearance of a relative of hers who has recently died, probably in Eastbourne.
