Biographical / Historical

John Reginald Wallace Gleave, son of a clergyman (6 Apr 1925 - 6 Aug 2006) was a consultant neurosurgeon at Addenbrooke's Hospital. He made a major contribution to the field of stereotaxis, the ability to target small areas of the brain with great precision. After working as a surgeon at hospitals in Liverpool and Oxford, he was invited in 1962 to join Walpole Lewin at the newly-formed neurosurgical unit at Cambridge. On Lewin's sudden death in 1980 Gleave became the senior neurosurgeon, and was instrumental in establishing the Bayer Chair of Neurosurgery shortly before his retirement in 1990.
