Biographical / Historical

Until the formation of the NHS in Jul 1948 Addenbrooke's Hospital, like many hospitals, was entirely dependent on charitable donations, gifts and legacies. With the introduction of a Government funded NHS this support continued as a registered charity. When Addenbrooke's became an NHS Trust in 1993 it took over the management of more than 300 Trust Funds, held on behalf of the hospital by the former Cambridge Health Authority. Addenbrooke's NHS Trust now (AHGR44//1/2/4 Charities Report 1998-1999) holds these funds as sole trustee within an umbrella charity. The Addenbrooke's' Charities were formed to oversee the general funds and the 300 individual funds.

The aim of the charity was to hold money and apply the income and capital for any charitable purpose relating to the NHS.

This Committee have now been superseded by the ACT Committees (Aug 2010)
