The post of Hospital Secretary had existed since the hospital's foundation. The post of Superintendent was established in 1900, with responsibility for all hospital affairs except those within the spheres of the Hospital staff or the Matron, the main task being the organisation of the collection of funds and to help the Treasurer. The two posts were amalgamated into the single full-time post of Secretary-Superintendent in 1904.
