Glossary of terms used in Addenbrooke’s News and Team prior to first reorganisation of NHS Addenbrooke’s = Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Trumpington Street and or Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Hills Road Hills Road or Hills Road site or New Site =Addenbrooke’s Hospital Hills Road Trumpington Street or Old Site = Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Trumpington Street Board or Board of Governors = Board of Governors of the United Cambridge Hospitals (Teaching Group) United Cambridge Hospitals (UCH) Teaching Hospital Groups set up at start of NHS directly answerable to Ministry of Health (MOH) or later Department of Health (DOH) part of the Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS). [Note: non teaching hospitals working groups or single very large hospitals run by a Hospital Management Committee (HMC’s) answerable to Regional Hospital Boards (RHB’s) EARHB - East Anglian Regional Health Board] The United Cambridge Hospital comprised: Addenbrooke’s Hospitals: Old and later both Old and New Sites Chesterton Hospital, Union Lane Brookfields Hospital, Mill Road Maternity Hospital Mill Road Douglas House Annexe, Trumpington Road Home of Recovery, Hunstanton The Chief Officers of the UCH were House Governor and Secretary Treasurer Matron (and later Chief Nursing Officer) After national re-structuring of the Nursing Service following the Salmon report the post of Matron, Deputy Matron and Assistant Matron were abolished and replaced by numbered scales and titles e.g. Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) responsible for all nursing in a group, Principal Nursing Officer, responsible for division e.g. Education, Maternity, (PNO), Senior Nursing Officer (SNO), responsible for an individual hospital or large specialised activity and Nursing Officer (NO). Grades and salaries wages of staff where lay down nationally and that day she ate it through the Whitley Councils - also hours of work annual leave and other conditions of service. There were separate Whitley Councils for Nursing and Midwifery (NM), Administrative and Clerical (A and C), Professional and Teaching (PT) and Ancillary Staff (ASC). Staff side on Whitley Councils were represented by Professional Organisations or Trade Unions e.g. General Nurses Council (GNC) Royal College of Nursing (RNC), Colleges and Psychotherapy and Radiology, COHSC Confederation of Health Service Employees NUPE- (National Union of Public Employees), ASTMS - (Scientific and Technical), TWG (Transport and General Workers)’ etc.

First reorganisation of NHS to second reorganisation 1973 to 1982 District Management Team (DMT) - accountable to Cambridgeshire Area Health Authority (AHA) for integrated Health Service within the Cambridge Health District (CHO). The Area Health Authority was responsible to the East Anglian Regional Health Authority (EARHA) The Cambridge Health District (Teaching) was divided into sectors which included Papworth and Huntingdon, Ely, Fulbourn and the Health Centres, Clinics and Community Health Services within them. GP services were run by Family Practitioner Committees (FPCs) [Note on catalogue for Addenbrooke’s News and TEAM after 1973. References to activities and staff at Chesterton, Brookfields, Fulbourn, Papworth, Ely and Huntingdon Hospitals, Health Centres and Community Health have generally been excluded from the catalogue except where they impinge significantly on Addenbrooke’s. Maternity Hospital references have been included in the knowledge that activities there would move in entirety to Addenbrooke’s Hills Road site. Also included are Douglas House Annexe and the Home of Recovery, Hunstanton.] The North Cambridge a sector included Maternity Hospital Mill Road Brookfields Hospital, Chesterton Hospital, East Barnwell and Eaton Socan District Centres. The South Cambridgeshire sector included Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Old and New sites, Clinical School, Douglas House and Health Centres at Sawston and, Linton and Great Shelford. [Note control of the Home of Recovery and Hunstanton transferred to King’s Lynn Health District but Addenbrooke’s patients were still accepted there until its closure]. The second RE organisation of the NHS 1982-1993 Area District Authority is abolished The District Health Authorities (DHAs) formed either within existing Health Districts or revised boundaries. The Minister of Health decided that the Cambridge Health District was to be divided into two separate Health District Authorities. Thus Huntington Health District Authority became the eighth (and additional) DHA in East Anglia. The remainder of the previous CHD became the Cambridge District Authority (CHA). Regional District Authority for East Anglia accepted Huntington District Council proposal for the New Huntington DHA boundaries include Papworth Hospital. The holders of posts at AHA level was slotted in or completed for new posts within the new DHA’s e.g. District Nursing Officer, District Works Officer, District Occupational Therapist or Psychotherapist, District Chiropodist etc. The Griffiths Report 1984 recommending the introduction of General Managers for Health Authorities was adopted by the Government. RHA General Managers were appointed first, then DHA Managers then Managers or Destructors of have specific functions or divisions within the District or individual hospital units. 1985: the First District General Manager for CHA appointed ( DGM) who wished to be known as Chief Executive who had under him a District Management Board (DMB) comprising: General Manager, Priority Services Director of Patient, Care Services Director of Finance Director of Administration and Development District Medical Officer General Manager Support Services General Manager Addenbrooke’s Unit and Consultant representative and GP representative
