17th century manuscripts, 1678 - 1942
Scope and Contents
Four 17C documents outlined as follows in a covering letter from Susan (?) Connington of Essex, the donor, 1942: 1) two letters, copied by James II of those found in the Strong Box of his brother Charles II addressed to the Bishop of Norwich, which show that he was a Catholic before the death-bed avowal [1685]; 2) printed document dated November 30 1678 describing the savage treatment of the remains of a Catholic executed for treason because his relatives, having had permission to remove the corpse, had it buried with Catholic rites; 3) an indenture of February 16 1825 formally appointing a James Shepherd to be Gaoler and Keeper of York Castle by the Sheriff John Hutton.
