Centre for Advanced Religious Studies, 1961 - 1975
Scope and Contents
Correspondence and papers concerning proposals for the establishment of a Centre for Advanced Religious Studies at St Edmund's. The early 1970s saw the introduction of the University of Cambridge Tripos in Sociology and at one point it was thought that the proposed Centre might supplement this in some form. [See also EDAR 1/8/13 for Raymond Corboy's papers concerning proposals for a Catholic Institute for Advanced Studies, 1958-64. Like the CIAS proposals, this project too failed to come to fruition - a letter of 1971 describes the plans as 'fluid, nebulous' and suggests that those involved were 'struggling to bring the idea to birth'. The eventual outcomes of these plans were the Von Hugel Lecture, begun in 1985, and the Von Hugel Institute, established at St Edmund's in 1987.
