This fund was originally set up by the S. F. I. A. Educational Trust in order to sponsor and pay for the education of a priest from the diocese of Masaka in Uganda, with the education being undertaken at St. Edmund's. By 1980, however, it was decided to simply transfer the money set aside for this cause directly to St. Edmund's to be distributed amongst suitable candidates from any 'underdeveloped country'.
