Biographical / Historical

Cuthbert Waring was a Lancashire man, the son of Leonard Waring and Elizabeth Hall, and was born 26 October 1884. He was educated at St Edward's College, Liverpool (1897-1904) and St Joseph's College, Up Holland (1904-1910), and was ordained priest for the Diocese of Liverpool in May 1910. At St Edmund's House (1910-13) he read History and proceeded BA in 1913. After this he spent a further year on English and Anglo-Saxon studies before leaving the house in 1914 to join the staff at St Joseph's College, Up Holland. Fifteen years later he was elected Master of St Edmund's House. After five troubled years as Master, Waring was recalled by his bishop to be chaplain to the Sisters of Notre Dame at Mount Pleasant in Liverpool. One year later (1935) he was appointed parish priest of Birchley, near Wigan. He found life in this quiet 16th century mission extremely congenial. Still more so was his next and last appointment - to St Gregory's, Weld Bank, Chorley. In the February of 1945 he described it to Charles Goulden as 'the atrium of heaven: a beautiful old church - a Lancashire congregation, a magnificent garden and a reasonably comfortable looking cemetery just alongside the church'. In this ecclesiastical Shangri-la, so suited to his temperament, he passed the remainder of his life and died 23 May , 1961.
