Frere makes a plea on behalf of Lane that his sentence to several years' transportation should be commuted. It is unclear what the connection between Frere and Lane was. The letter refers to Lane's training as a cooper, but there is no apparent connection with Downing College. Also includes a copy of a newspaper advert placed by Downing College, reading 'If Mr Nicholas Lane, who, in 1845, addressed a letter to the lady of the Master of Downing College, Cambridge, will call on the...
