Scope and Contents

These letters give much details about everyday university and college life. Includes depositor correspondence. Contents include (from summary in The Griffin, Michaelmas 1961): discontent with College food and student protests about the cost and quality of food at Sidney Sussex, 1868, whereas 'at College the charge was 1/6d for bad meat and potatoes only'; Dr Perkins' invitation to all Freshmen to wine (1868), 'a very pleasant, easy affair, for Perkins is the most unceremonious man I ever knew.. He told us only Radicals and Dissenters don't drink port'; 'Varsity' student antics in the Market Square, culminating in the lighting of a bonfire and carrying off the Proctor who came to intervene without his bull-dogs, 1871; description of a 'perpendicular' event in the Master's Lodge, at the invitation of Dr Worsley, where several undergraduates were invited to attend, including a description of the drawing-room as 'a good room.. The pictures are a series of water-colours of Dr Worsley's own painting. They are very fine, most splendid air and distance effects', 1868, including also drawings of the exterior and interior of the Senate House and a description of the matriculation ceremony; reference to the Boat Club 'rowing regularly in hopes of not coming to utter grief in the races', although the Captain was ill with typhoid fever in Leghorn, 'the usual luck of our boat' (1871).
