Scope and Contents
The collection consists of an extensive series of letters from F. R. Leavis, 1935-63, before and after his time working with Mason at Downing College; letters from Q. D. Leavis to Mason, 1943-7; lecture notes from Mason's period at Exeter University and as F. R. Leavis Lecturer at the English Faculty in Cambridge, 1965-78; and other academic papers such as drafts for articles etc. Annotations on lecture notes and draft essays are thought to be Mason's own.

Biographical / Historical
Harold A. Mason (1911-1993) was a Fellow and Assistant Director of Studies in English at Downing between 1949 and 1955, under F R Leavis. After leaving Downing when the funding for his post expired, he left Cambridge for a lectureship at Exeter University, returning in 1965 when he was appointed to the F R Leavis Lectureship, an independently funded post attached to the Cambridge English Faculty, retiring in 1978. He was one of the founding editors of 'The Cambridge Quarterly' in 1966 and contributed to it for more than 25 years. He died on 25 November 1993.
