Biographical / Historical
Harry Orme Dooyewaard was born in October 1919, the son of Johannes and Christiana Dooyewaard of Ashtead. He matriculated at Downing College in 1938 studying Natural Sciences and was an active member of the Boat Club. After the outbreak of war, Harry returned to the College after transferring to the MML Tripos, studying French and Spanish. He remained in College for the first year of the war. After being accepted by the Fleet Air Arm, Harry was given permission by the Admiralty in early 1940 to remain in College until after his examinations in June 1940, to complete the qualification for his degree (with the three terms allowed for military service). He continued rowing and, in the 1940 May Races, he was Stroke in the 2nd Boat which 'went up eight places and covered themselves with glory'. After being awarded a 'Special' in his Tripos exams, he had not quite met the requirements for his degree when he was called up for military service in the Navy. He received his commission in December 1943, acting as a Naval Liaison Officer to the Dutch Navy. Sub-Lt. Dooyewaard was killed in action on 24 April 1944, when the tug boat he was aboard, HM Roode Zee, was torpedoed while towing Mulberry Harbour components from Dungeness to Portsmouth. He is commemorated on the College war memorial and on Chatham Naval Memorial. Johannes Dooyewaard donated two paintings by his brother, Willem, to Downing College in 1951 in memory of his son. These were originally hung in the JCR and, in 2019, were conserved and hung in the refurbished Music Room in the West Lodge.
