Biographical / Historical

Downing College's Boat Club was founded in 1863 - against the odds considering the College had at that time only 14 undergraduates. Downing's first Blue was William Fisher MacMichael who rowed for Cambridge in the 1867 Boat Race. In 1895 Downing's first Boat House was built (by Basil Hardcastle) which, by the end of the twentieth century, was slowly subsiding into the river and was demolished. The new boat house was completed in spring 2001.
