Biographical / Historical
A committee reported to Downing College Governing Body on June 1913, that for about £11,000 a chapel and 24 sets of rooms might be erected near the north west corner of the Domus. An architect, Cecil G. Hare (1875-1932) was consulted. The Governing Body eventually reacted favourably to his plans but it was revealed that the scheme could only be carried out if a large sum was raised by voluntary subscriptions. Thus in May 1914 the first public appeal for fresh building funds was made by Downing. It turned out to be a failure due to the outbreak of the First World War, and the Hare buildings were never realised.
