College 'pre-foundation' legal and Chancery records, 1764 - 1861
Scope and Contents
These papers document the attempts of the heirs-at-law of George Downing and their solicitors to gain possession of the Downing Estates and revenues according to the will of George Downing. Most of the papers derive from the various causes that dragged on in Chancery, even until well after the College foundation. As such this series represents a 'stand-alone' and slightly artificial record group. Note also that the many of the papers of the cause Attorney General vs Vigor are included, despite being post foundation. See Scope and Content note in the sub-series.
