Scope and Contents
Includes photographs of family life before A. C. Seward became Master at Downing, including at the family's Old Farm Cottage in Walberswick with family, visitors and friends, Seward's lab and the family home (at Westfield, Cambridge), including Marion's studio. Others pictured include: Frances Lupton; Arthur Rackham; Connie and Molly Scott; Bertram Priestman (painting with Marion) and Mrs Priestman; Professor Yapp; Taffy Giles and Betty Willis; Mr Rose and Dr Giles; Mrs Alexander and Catherine and Mary; Barbara Burnham. Downing scenes include: First World War groups and wartime parties hosted at Downing (Girl Guides (incl Carola), Tipperary Club, various soldiers, Serbian refugees, Country Dance gathering); young children of Tutor J. H. Widdicombe (residents in the West Lodge); May Races (various groups with Seward women with Downing students, including Lt. Liddell); various views of the grounds and Master's Lodge gardens (including conservatory); picnic groups including Hugh Hamshaw Thomas and P. Blackett. Also includes: Phyllis in fancy dress on the Euripides trip to Australia, 1914; Phyllis's wedding to Michael Sampson (family group on Master's Lodge steps, with names); Dorothy, Phyllis and Margery as young girls with Warburton Wingate on Walberswick Common, 1902.
