Marion Seward's Five Year Diary, 1919-08-28 - 1923-12
Scope and Contents
"Received this book from Mr Cruikshank", 28 August 1919. Brief, but often very informative, daily entries detailing guests at the Master's Lodge in Downing, activities and events attended in College and elsewhere in Cambridge (by herself as well as her husband, A. C. Seward), including Tipperary Club and Cambridge Drawing Society, and family matters, including holidays to Suffolk (Walberswick, Southwold and Aldeburgh) and Denmark, August 1921. [Her husband is referred to as 'B' throughout.] Notable entries include: (17 May 1919, with press cutting) dissolution of war-time Tipperary Club, to be reorganised as 'a peace-time, self-supporting women's club' [New Tipperary Club]; (11 November 1919) first anniversary of the Armistice - two minutes' silence outside King's College; (12 November 1919) report that Dunwich Tower [the gradual demise of which she had drawn in a series of drawings over many years] had fallen into the sea on this day, with press cutting; (28 February 1920) presentation of portrait of W. P. Schreiner; (6 November 1920) exhibition of 1914 Australian voyage watercolours at Heffers in Cambridge (with press cuttings attached, 1-2 Nov); (11 March 1921) description of huge Downing crowds outside the Senate House for the presentation of A. C. Seward's 'Ge. D' [Doctor of Geology?] degree; (23 October 1921) disgust at damage to the Clough Gates at Newnham College following the vote on women's degrees; (24 November 1921) description of contents of the 13 boxes AC Seward brought back from his expedition to Greenland; (25-26 November 1919) "The rest of Dunwich Tower went this week". Notable visitors include: [Bertram Walter] Priestman, artist; Hugh Hamshaw Thomas (a regular visitor). Memoranda at the rear includes names (and wages) of cooks, E. Fuller, Mildred Glasscock, Lucy Cole, Rose Thurlbourn.
