Scope and Contents
The list in the letter depositing the collection includes an item 5, 'Private MSS' which was thought not to have been present. Item 6, 'the MS of my father's book 'Experiences of a Diplomatist' (1872) carries an annotation by H[arold] T[emperley] to the effect that these were not deposited in 1923 and a search in the Master's papers after his death in 1924 did not reveal it. However a folder so listed was found with group 4 and appears as group 5 below. Many of these papers were used by A. W. Ward in writing his chapter for the 'Cambridge History of British Foreign Policy', vol. II, Chap. XIII'. A note dated July 2002 suggests that this is what is here listed as 'Recollections of Germany'. See also the account of these papers on pp. xxvii-xviii in 'In Memoriam Adolphus William Ward, Master of Peterhouse (1900-1924)' (Cambridge, 1924).

Biographical / Historical
John Ward (1805-1890), diplomat, was born on 28 August 1805 at East Cowes, son of John Ward, collector of customs. He received training in the law, but chose to become an inspector of prisons in 1837. In 1838 he was appointed secretary to the New Zealand Colonization Company, and in 1841 British commissioner for the revision of the state tolls. In 1845 he became consul-general at Leipzig. During the 1850s he engaged in diplomatic work on behalf of Britain on the continent. He was made chargé d'affaires and consul-general for the Hanse Towns and the surrounding area in Germany in 1860, and was promoted to minister-resident in 1866. He retired to England in 1870, and died at Dover on 1 September 1890. Apart from his 'Reminiscences of a Diplomatist, being Recollections of Germany, founded on diaries kept during the years 1840-70', by John Ward, C.B. (Macmillan & Co.,1872) he was author of a booklet, The Diplomatic and Consular Service, reprinted from 'The Glasgow Herald', 1873.
