Biography

Arthur Saxon Dennett Smith (1883-1950), philologist and athlete, and bard of the Gorsedd of Wales and of Cornwall (under the name 'Caradar'). There are travel journals in the collection that seem to have belonged to his brother, who was an officer of the Western Telegraph Company, but whose name is not recorded.

Scope and Contents Arthur Smith's papers comprise a diary, 1902-3, made at Jesus College, Cambridge; MS record of races run, 1906-08; typescript record of athletics achievements, 1896-1908; biographical memoir; and an obituary by Ashley Rowe. Smith's brother's papers consist of typescripts: Lists of journeys, 1910-32; Journal in Argentina, 1914; Journal in the Falkland Islands, 1915 (incomplete); Journal in Uruguay, 1916; and a Sea voyage back to England, via Madeira, Canaries, undated.
