Lewis Jarvis left England for South Africa in 1897 and joined the Cape Mounted Rifles as a private soon after. He served for six years, through the period of the Boer War.

Scope and Contents 95 letters from Lewis Jarvis to his mother, Mrs. Lewis Jarvis, containing information about the peacetime duties of the regiment, and news from actions around Wepener (1900) and hot pursuit operations along the Cape Colony frontier (1901-2). All letters have their original envelopes, except for /26-7, /29, /49-8, /51-2, /57, /60, /64, /66-7, /71, /77-8, /94, and /96.
