Biography

Howells, Herbert Norman (1892-1983), composer, was born on 17 October 1892 at High Street, Lydney, Gloucestershire, the youngest of the eight children of Oliver Howells (1854-1919), painter and decorator, and his wife, Elizabeth Burgham (1856-1946). His parents were both natives of Gloucestershire from the Forest of Dean, and this border country was to remain a source of inspiration to Howells throughout his life. The poem The restful branches by W.A. Byrne was set to music for voice and piano in 1918, and published by Stainer & Bell c.1920. The humorous song 'The breathless ballad of 'Peter-Pan Quartets'. The work of 'Bublum' [Howells]. To the Lady Audrey Â the heroine herein' was composed by Howells in March 1916.
