Biography

Derek Pepys Whiteley was born in 1906, the son of Gerard Tarver Whiteley and the Hon. Amy Theresa Pepys. Originally known as G.D.P. Whiteley, he later changed his surname to Pepys Whiteley.

Pepys Whiteley was educated at Sherborne School and King's College, Cambridge. He was a Harmsworth Law Scholar and was called to the Bar from the Middle Temple in 1931. He became senior legal assistant in the Treasury Solicitor's Department, retiring in 1957. From 1959 to 1970 he was Assistant Pepys Librarian of the Pepys Library at Magdalene College. An expert on Victorian art history, he published "George du Maurier: His Life and Work" in 1948, and wrote articles for Dictionary of National Biography.
