Vines, Sydney Howard, 1849-1934 (botanist)

Biography

Sydney Howard Vines (1849-1934), botanist, was born in Hackney on 31 December 1849, and educated privately and at Guy's Hospital (B.Sc., London, 1873). He entered Christ's College, Cambridge, in 1872 (B.A., 1876; M.A., 1879), where he was Fellow and lecturer, 1876-1888. Vines was University Reader in Botany at Cambridge, 1884-1888, and Sherardian Professor and Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford, 1888-1919. He edited Annals of botany, 1887-1899. He died at Exmouth on 4 April 1934.

Letters on scientific subjects, accompanied by a few printed items. There are also photocopies of two obituaries of Vines, one of which is taken from Obituary notices of the Royal Society of London, no. 3 (December 1934), pp. 185-188, and the Phillips sale catalogue entry for the collection, 26 June 1986.
