Biography

Edward Johnston (1872-1944), calligrapher and designer, was born in Uruguay on 11 February 1872, and educated privately. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University, 1896-1897, but was forced to leave due to his health. After studying the pen shapes of letters in early manuscripts at the British Museum, 1898-1899, he taught the first classes in Formal Penmanship and Lettering at the London County Council Central School, 1899-1912. He was also a teacher at the Royal Cambrian Academy from 1901. Johnston died on 26 November 1944.

Scope and Contents Edward Johnston designed four types for the Cranach Press of Count Harry Kessler: 1. 2-line Brevier italic lower case (1912-1913) 2. 8-, 10- and 12-point blackletter (1912-1930) 3. 16-point Greek (1929-1930, abortive) 4. 2-line Brevier italic capitals (1930-1931).
