Biography
John W. ('Jake') Carter was a bookseller and bibliographer. He is best remembered as the co-author (with Graham Pollard) of An enquiry into the nature of certain nineteenth century pamphlets (1934) which exposed the forgeries of Harry Buxton Forman and Thomas J. Wise. Chief among his other books is ABC for book-collectors (5 editions in his lifetime, 1952-72). Carter was the head of the London rare-book department of Charles Scribner's Sons 1927-1953, after which he joined the firm of Sotheby's, opening their New York office in 1955. He was later a director of the firm. Carter was a friend of Stanley Morison, and was one of the organizers of the exhibition 'Printing and the Mind of Man' in 1963 (see MS Add. 9827).
