Biography

Roger North, Lord North (1530-1600), born 27 Feb. 1530; M.P. for Cambridgeshire, 1555, 1559 and 1563-1564; succeeded to the barony, 1564; K.B. at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth, 15 Jan. 1559; admitted Gray's Inn, 29 Dec. 1561; Commissioner of Musters for Cambridgshire, 1565; Governor of Flushing, June 1586; provisional Governor of Utrecht and Governor of Harlingen, July 1586; Lord Lieutenant for Cambridgeshire, 1588, and in July Captain of the light horse of the Queen's bodyguard; Privy Councillor, 30 Aug. 1596, and Treasurer of the Household, 30 Aug. 1596 until his death; died at London, 3 Dec. 1600.
