Biography

Lionel Berkeley was appointed Moonsiff of Saharunpore in the Indian Civil Service in the early 1840s. He was promoted successively Sudder Ameen of Delhi (1857); Principal Sudder Ameen of Delhi (1858); Extra Assistant Commissioner, Delhi (1858); Judge of Small Cause Court, Delhi (1863); Judge of Small Cause Court, Lahore (1863); and Assistant Commissioner, Paper Currency, Lahore (1864), a position he held until 1867.

Scope and Contents Letters, reports and other papers regarding Berkeley's career, including material concerning the Indian Mutiny (1857). The collection includes a printed 'Record of the services of Mr L.
