Biography
Henry George Ashworth Leveson (1869-1928) was born on 3 September 1869, and educated at Marlborough. He entered Clare College, Cambridge, in 1887, and that year joined the Indian Civil Service. He was posted to Burma, where he arrived in 1889, taking up the post of Assistant Commissioner. Leveson became Assistant Superintendent, S. Shan States, 1892; Deputy Commissioner, 1901; and Commissioner, 1911. After retiring from the service in 1914, he was Admiralty Commissioner of Imperial Defence and Private Secretary to the Second Sea Lord. He died in London on 9 January 1928. In 1902 Leveson was posted to Bharmo. He left Shanghai on SS Sinwo on 31 January 1902, and travelled via Hankow and Ichang to Chungking, arriving 16 March 1902. His party departed on foot, 20 March 1902, and travelled through Chengtu, Ningyuan, Yunnanfu, Talifu and Tengyueh, reaching Bhamo on 8 June 1902, after a journey of 1,115 miles.
