Biography

Ian Davie (1924-2000) was a schoolteacher, civil servant and poet. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy and at St John's College, Oxford, where Kingsley Amis and Philip Larkin were his contemporaries. He was received into the Roman Catholic Church in 1950. His publications in verse included Piers Prodigal (1961), Roman Pentecost (1970) and Angkor Apparent (1988), and in prose Jesus Purusha: a Vedanta-based doctrine of Jesus (1985).

Scope and Contents From the Series:

Miscellaneous letters, cards and photographs, which Sassoon sent to Mother Margaret with some of his letters. These items have become separated from their covering letters (section /1-345). Identifying the appropriate covering letter might allow the researcher to date the item more accurately.

A collection of 1094 letters, postcards and other items known as 'Sassoon's residual correspondence' although it does also include a number of items addressed to other persons particularly to his wife, Hester, and his mother, Theresa Thornycroft.
