Biography

Bartolome Cairasco de Figueroa (1540-1610) was born in Gran Canaria in 1540, and became prior and canon of its cathedral. His religious verse was published in four parts as Templo militante, 1603-1614.

Scope and Contents 'Esdruxulea de varios elogios y canciones en alabanca de Christo nuestro senor y de la sacratissima Virgen su madre de algunos sanctos y diversos sujetes', a collection of poems dated Canaria, 7 May 1611. The volume was prepared for the press by Captain Francisco de Betancor. In his dedication to the Cardinal-Archbishop of Toledo, Betancor records that the poems were composed in the last days of Cairasco's life.
