Asks for news, 'As for me, I stand as firmly as can be expected on this globe of blood and filth';enjoys his work and is teaching himself to swim: 'I want to write a novel which opens with the whole of the characters bathing ... and I also want to collect a bathing anthology ...'; 'I expect to lead a Cambridge, literary existence until I die, but to lead it in a dream in which its gaiety and its seriousness are equally remote from facts.'
