Biography

William Govett Romaine (1815-93), barrister and government official, was Deputy Judge-Advocate of the Army in the east at the time of the Crimean War, and afterwards Second Secretary of the Admiralty. In 1869 he was appointed Judge-Advocate-General in India, and from 1876 to 1879 he was a member of the Egyptian Conseil du Trésor and then English Comptroller-General of finances under the joint control of Egypt. For this lengthy period of official service he was awarded nothing higher than a CB in 1857.
