Biography

Benjamin Kidd (1858-1916), socialist, was born near Bandon, county Cork, on 9/9/1858. He worked as a clerk for the Inland Reveinue at Somerset House, London, from 1877 until the success of his 'Social Evolution' (1894) allowed him to resign his position and concentrate on writing. Kidd took advantage of his new independence to travel around the U.S.A. and Canada (1898) and to visit South Africa (1902). He published 'Principles of Western Civilization' in 1902, and wrote 'The science of power' (1918) and 'A philosopher with nature' (1921), which appeared posthumously. He died at South Croydon on 2/10/1916
