Biography

George Stuart Graham-Smith was born 1875, the son of a colonel in the Indian Army. He entered Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1894 and graduated BA in 1897. He then went to study at Guy’s Hospital, qualifying in medicine in 1901, before returning to Cambridge to study pathology with Louis Cobbett. In 1902 Cobbett secured the post of Bacteriologist to the Borough of Cambridge for Graham Smith, a post he held until 1924. The same year he was made Demonstrator in Clinical Pathology at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, though he soon relinquished the post to return to Cambridge as the John Lucas Walker student. He graduated MD in 1905 and in 1907 was appointed Cambridge University’s Lecturer in Hygiene. In 1923 the University appointed him Reader in Preventative Medicine. Graham-Smith was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1919. He married Violet Leith-Ross in 1910 and they had one son. He died in 1950.
